CADWELL PARK 6th / 7th September 2008

JAGUAR CLASSIC PARTS JAGUAR SALOON CHAMPIONSHIP

Race 1
Welcome everyone to rounds 9 and 10 with a weekend of racing here in Lincolnshire at Cadwell Park, with its twisty, bendy, up and down 2.1 mile circuit.

A lot of the drivers really enjoy this track. Unfortunately, a lot of their cars didn't as they were pushed to the limit and a little more!

First to qualify on Saturday, in dreadful conditions, were the Saloons, who had a short session after Phil Woods put his XJ40 into a tyre wall and brought out the red flags. However Richard Dorlin, who has had an outstanding season, was on pole, Dave Bye 2nd and Simon Lewis 3rd, all in XJ6's.

When the race started, 21 Saloons powered up to the first bend at Park. It was Dave Bye who led from Dorlin but by lap 2 the positions were reversed. By lap 3 Lewis had dropped back to 5th but then started to claw his way back into the race, moving up to 3rd until disaster struck on the last lap and he coasted onto the grass at the bottom of The Mountain. It turned out that an in-line fuse connecter to the fuel pump had come away. Simon was very disappointed but the problem was solved for racing on Sunday.

The rain that started on lap two was to prove a tester when Dave Bye spun on lap 7, giving Dorlin some breathing space for a lap until he was forced off when overtaking a slower car. This opened the door for Mike Cann in a lovely XJ40 to take the chequered flag and Class D win with Tim Morrant's XJ6 just 1.4 seconds behind and taking Class B win. Richard recovered well to finish 3rd. Dave Bye crossed the line in 5th place just as his fan belt snapped!

Peter Dorlin in his beautiful MK II was 6th, 0.3 of a second behind Dave and Rick Walker was just as close finishing 7th, half a second behind Peter. How close was that!

Nick Gwinnutt was the Class E winner in his X-300 and Dean Sewell was the Class A winner

Race 2
On Sunday the weather was much better with the sun poking its head out from time to time (probably to watch the Jags race). On the grid 21 cars reappeared in the order they finished race one, now with Mike Cann on pole, Tim Morrant 2nd and Richard Dorlin 3rd. When the red lights went out Mike got the best start to stay ahead, Tim was a close second until lap 3 when Richard passed as Tim spun at Charlies dropping him back to 6th.

Peter Dorlin was now up to 3rd from 6th with a brilliant drive. Ken Angel in his XJ40 was also having a blinder coming from 21st to 13th, but all this hard work was to no avail as on lap 4 the seventeen year old rookie, Patrick Doyle was being severely pressured by Phil Woods causing Patrick to over-cook the exit at Mansfield and found himself trapped on the banking.

The race was red flagged and declared over. Mike was the winner, Richard 2nd and his father Peter was 3rd.

TOYO TIRES XJS CHAMPIONSHIP

Race 1
The XJS's also had a wet and greasy track on Saturday but that means nothing to these two door beasts. Sixteen cats took part and Stewart Lyddall was on pole, Andrew Harrison 2nd and big Gary Hastings 3rd.

When the red lights went out Stewart shot away but Chris Palmer was hot on his heels in 2nd from 6th and Lawrence Ball with great start had jumped from 5th to 3rd, but disaster once again as Lawrence Coppock spun off at the Hairpin, the red flags were waved and everyone returned to the grid in their original positions and waited while Lawrence's car was retrieved, there was a lot of frontal damage (nearly as bad as Amy Winehouse after a night out).

When the race restarted Lyddall was away again, Harrison got a better start to stay second and Hastings 3rd. Mark Russell shot up from 10th to 5th in his V12.

So we thought we had a race on until the third lap when Paul Merrett who was shooting up the field from 13th to 7th spun at Hall Bend. The red flags were once again waved and the race brought to premature end.

Stewart took Class G and race win, Andrew Class D and 2nd with Chris Palmer 3rd and Class E winner.

Race 2
Surely Sunday couldn't be worse than Saturday. Oh dear!!

Lawrence Coppock pulled an ace from his sleeve when he used his other racing car, a 6.0 litre V12, so he could have another go.

The cars lined up in the positions they finished on Saturday and when the red lights went out Lyddall was off, Palmer close behind and Lawrence Ball again went from 6th to 3rd.

Everyone was tightly bunched for the first couple of laps until lap 3 when Gary Hastings and Andrew Harrison were involved in a racing incident in the wooded area of the circuit. Hastings got a dent in the rear wing and Harrison lost a rear bumper, and guess what !! The red flags were once again being waved like the Bejing Olympics.

Everyone else lined up again and when the red lights went out Stewart led but was now having trouble and couldn't stop the rear end of the car from hanging out because his tyres were spent. Mark Russell cottoned on to this and was all over the back of Stewart like a rash. This turned into a fantastic battle of wits but Mark just couldn't seem to find a gap. Lyddall was grateful to see the chequered flag 5 laps later with Mark less than half a second behind. Chris Palmer was 3rd and Class E winner.

Roger Webster got his first Class D win and an 8th place from Ian Drage who was only 0.2 of a second behind.

Another two lads who had a racing incident were Matt Skelton and Paul Merrett, when they touched at Mansfield. Poor Matt was stranded with broken steering and damage to the front while Merrett managed to rejoin the race but a lap later had to retire when he got a puncture to a rear tyre.
